Italy: Eating Out

There are many restaurants (ristoranti) in Italy, as well as the less formal trattoria and osteria which serve local delicacies.
The traditional Italian meal consists of antipasto (starter) followed by a first dish, primo (pasta or rice recipes), a second dish called secondo (meat or fish recipes). This is served with contorno (vegetables mainly), cheese or fruit. Then a dessert, espresso coffee, a strong digestive liqueur (grappa or amaro) completes the meal.
One can also head to a panineria (sandwich bar) and pizzeria.
Restaurants of Italy charge more for eating seated than standing. Some might also charge cover charge and service charges.
Restaurants across Italy open around 12.30pm for lunch and 7.30pm for dinner.
Most restaurants have cheaper set of meals too.
Tourist menu and meal of the day includes two courses, sans drinks, for about 12-20 euros.
Tipping in Italy is casual.
